Veritas Driver/Windows Update

This morning I was updating my backup server. This server is running Veritas Backup Exec 10d on a Windows 2000 Adv Svr attached to a HP LTO 3 Ultrium Autoloader 1/8. I was doing my updates via MS update. I ran the update "Driver update for Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-3 drive".

After the update I noticed two issues. The first was the sql srv as well as all dependency type services, "backup exec", would not start automatically. I started them manually and they started fine. After they started I noticed the tape drive itself showed off line and would not respond. The autoloader seemed fine.

I attempted a complete power down and restart of the server and the autoloader. No dice... I attempted to uninstall the one windows update. No luck there either. In device manager the drive was showing an issue "Yellow !". I told it to search for an updated driver and it did find one. That two did not fix it. Same symptoms.

To finally fix the issue I simply ran tapeinst.exe to reinstall the orginal Veritas drivers. I did not do an uninstall I just told it to use the original drivers. It installed drivers for just the drive. After a reboot I was able to inventory, unlock, and backup normally.

New toy? Maybe...

Well here's a pic of my hopefully newest toy. It's a 2005 Honda Shadow Aero 750. This is a pic of a 2006 model but it's still pretty close. I should know the status for sure in the next couple of months, but there is a possibility I'll know something much sooner. I'm going to keep my current 2000 Kawasaki ZX7R as well as this one. That way if I want to go fast, I can. If I want to have just a nice comfy ride, I can do that too.

Blog move...

Well you may have noticed, or maybe not, that I've moved the blog. For a short time I'll be keeping up the old and new blog. The are both wordpress so they will work and look very similar. There are some new features that I am unable to host on the old site as well as some features on the old site that I can't have on this blog. But when it comes down to it, I need the space on my main web site and over here they keep it up to date and deal with the day to day maintenance. Anyway, the new URL is http://iflyjet.wordpress.com or you can access this from the Blog link on the main site. Either way is good.

Still Undecided…

Like everything else in my life, I'm still undecided about this whole Windows Vista thing. I installed it on my work computer last week. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate and am trying to duplicate my previous windows setup with all my cool networking tools on it. I wasn't completely dumb about it, I set it up to dual boot back to my old XP installation just in case.

I do have to say, that it's pretty. It looks very good. I am using aero which of course adds to the "Pretty" factor. A few of the windows have been cleaned up and are a little easier to navigate and understand then in previous versions. I do think I like the new "start" menu much better. In older version when you open the start menu, if you had many folders and many icons in those folders you will get this situation where you would have to scroll your menu and if you had a small resolution it may actually run off the end of the screen. With the new "start" menu it incorporates your recently used programs as well as a start menu that eliminates that need to have the menu cascading across your screen. They have also re-worked the file system structure. It's more Unix/Linux/Mac like. They got rid of the "Documents and Settings" folder and replaced it with "Users".

On the other hand there are a few things I don't really like about it. UAC (User Account Control) is horrible. Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea. I whole heartedly believe that any program that is going to modify the system should have to ask for permissions before doing so. But with Vista UAC is asked for EVERY SINGLE ACTION I do. Have you seen the Mac commercial with the windows guy having to say Accept like 15 times, that's not an exaggeration. That's pretty much fact. This isn't COMPLETELY Microsoft's fault, but some rest on the software companies. For so long they just expected to have admin right so they wrote their software so it would function only with admin rights. They had admin rights due to Microsoft's short sighted outlook on security. Now that they are tightening the noose so to speak, all these programs are still expecting to be able to do what they please. Thus a thousand freakin popup's asking for permission. I'll be totally honest, I had to turn mine off. I don't suggest that for others, but for the security conscience, it's the only way to go.

There are of course other things that I like and don't like about Vista. Too many to go into here. For now I'm still in the Mac camp but I reserve the right to change my mind if MS pulls something outta their asses and makes this a usable yet safe operating system.

P. S. Get well Grandpa!

ick…

Just just looked at my check book for the first time after taking Brandt to the dentist. He had a root canal and a porcelain crown done. A couple of years ago he took a nasty spill on his bicycle and killed off one of his front teeth. It had turned gray and I was concerned that with him being a teenager it would impact his self confidence. So we decided to get it fixed. It's looking really good. I'm sure once they are finished it will look completely normal. Well anyway, today was the first time I looked at my checkbook since cutting that nearly $1300 check. Luckily I had the money in the back so it's not like we are going to be eating from the dumpster in the back of McDonald's or anything, but it still hurts none the less. Anyway, I just wanted to say... Ouch!

First Try…

Here's my first try using iMovie. We are practicing trying to learn some of the techniques Brandt will be using for a school project. It's just over 36 seconds and less than 1MB of a download. BTW, I'm the bald guy and Brandt is the guy in the lower right of the intro. Sergent Gatowag if you have good eyes.

UPDATE: Here's a little better version. I think we both like this one best.
