Comment Spam
/This is just an FYI on the progress I've made on limiting or in this case apparently eliminating the comment spam. See start test here. Since I started this current comment spam test, 17 days ago, I have had exactly zero comment spams. Prior to that I had anywhere from 10 to 100 comments per day. Initially I combated this problem by moderating the comments. This meant that I had to go in and approve each comment daily. Even with the many WordPress spam plugins available I still had to put up with seeing the emails an occasionally they still made it through. This new method, although extremely simple, has apparently proven itself extremely successful. Basically these spam bots search blogs and determine what software they are using. In this case WordPress. The bot then knows that the comment post script is wp-comments-post.php or something like that. It then uses that script to post its spam. What I've done is to rename that script, then find and replace in the rest of the blog package code on that script name to the new script name. I know this isn't completely foolproof. All a bot has to do is to search the comment form for the post script in code and then post to that. But with all the other blogs out there with out any modifications I figure they'll just move on to the next one and leave me the hell alone. I hope anyway. Well, enough geek for today.....
