New Project

So I have very low moral at work now adaze, thus this is the result of that moral... I used to have this web site I went to in order to find airplane pics, wallpaper, and such. It was a page where every time you load it up it would display random pictures from Google. Well this site disappeared for a while and has been up and down a few times over the years, so I decided to write my own. I did something similar by pulling images from LiveJournal here http://www.williamhughes.net/ljimages.php. That is ok but not the greatest. I was able to get the original code of the page. That was in JavaScript. Since I'm not a whiz at JavaScript I decided to re-write it in php. Here's the code just in case anyone wants it. It's not quality code I know, but works none the less. Check it out and let me know what you think. Refresh the page for a whole new batch of pics. I'll probably tweak it a bit over the next week or two. BTW, this may display images that are not safe for work or children.

This was basically a pretty easy page.
1. Randomly choose a file naming convention format. This is different for each camera manufacture.
2. Create a giant case statement. Each case is a naming convention format.
3. In each case, randomly generate digits to format into a file name.
4. Copy that filename into a google search url.
5. Output html for a frame page and set the lower from to the google url.

*I tried to do an include to include the google html into my page. This didn't work because of the absolute paths in the google page.
*Many of the naming formats contained dates. Most of these are easy. Years were limited to 2004-2006. Months in many were hex vaules between 1 and C. A few had other options such as size. I choose large.
*There are many other settings and functions that I can add, but that will be a bit later. Maybe next time I get bored.

The Dark Side

Yes, it's true. I have made the final move over to the dark side. Today I purchase a computer from Apple. It wasn't as far a leap as you may think. Do I make my living off of Micro$oft? Sure. Do I spend a large part of my day looking at a start menu? Sure. But I've spend more and more of my time in "other" OS's. Linux, BSD, and a few other NX's. Since OS X and Apple's move towards a unix type OS I've given them much more respect and a second look they probably deserved. I currently own three iPod's that I am very happy with. That and the move of the iMac to a intel chip was just enough to push me over the edge. The iMac went on sale yesterday and today I got one. Well I don't have it yet, but it's on it's way. I expect to have it in hands in a week. Well I guess time will tell.

Ouch

So I can hardly walk now. I had softball practice tonight and my shins are FRIGGIN KILLING me! They hurt a little bit last week, but I think the fact that my arm were actually bleeding from throwing so much made my shins seem inconsequential. Now this week my arm is all healed up so I notice them more. Anyway, I did very well. My fielding of course needs improvement, but I saw a lot of improvement over last week. My batting was solid. I did manage a in the field home run with a little help from our lack of fielding of course. :) We are kind of like the Bad News Bears, only with more cursing. :P

On another note, I've been having a lot of luck on the Xbox. Some of it good, some bad. Luckily enough for me I've learned a lot on the way. I actually hosed my drive over the weekend but I had learned enough to be able to recover it. I've gotten many things that didn't work on the original modded box to work. I certainly don't know everything but I'm pretty confident about the things I did learn. I don't really know how this will help me in life, career, or love, but if you know a hot blonde that needs to hire someone, a date as well as a knowledge of softmodding an Xbox, I'm your guy.

You decide ….

So I'm surfing around the internet last night, I found my most
favorite piece of spyware/adware type pain in the ass program.
I decided that I'd take a peek at EULA and see what all it
contained. Read these random sentences and partial sentences
and decide for yourself.

"THE SOFTWARE IS SPYWARE FREE AND NO REGISTRATION OR
PERSONAL INFORMATION IS REQUIRED FOR USE."
Will.....Spyware free, huh? No personal info, huh? Keep that in mind.

"We reserve the right to add additional features or functions
to the existing Software."
Will.....So this gives them the right to add to the software
with out even really asking your permission.

"the Software periodically communicates with our servers"
Will.....This is true, I've ran the sniffer on it and that it does.

"This update may occur automatically or through other means and
may occur all at once or over multiple sessions."
Will.....So this means they can update with out any interaction with
you.

"You acknowledge and agree that the Software is licensed, not sold to
you by Licensor"
Will.....This isn't just spyware, but many other software packages do
this Too. You don't own this software, they do.

"The Software is exposed to various security issues, and should be
regarded as unsecure"
Will.....This is a feel good line.

"By accepting this Agreement, you acknowledge and accept that the
Software, and any information you download or offer to share by means of the
Software, may be exposed to unauthorized access, interception, corruption, damage
or misuse, and should be regarded as insecure. You accept all
responsibility for such security risks and any damage resulting therefrom."
Will.....So even if their software caused a security hole you would be
responsible for any damage. That's like because you bought be a cup of
coffee you are responsible if I shot someone with me new gun.

"The Software, in the course of processing a given search query, sends a
request to our servers. This request includes the keyword query, time of
day, browser type, default language setting, IP address, an anonymous
unique ID, and a code which identifies the distribution source of the Software
used by you to conduct your search."
Will.....Now, remember they stated they are not spyware, yet here they
are sending out information. Personally sounds like spyware to me.

"For example, we use a cookie to record which search engine you have
selected as your default provider"
Will.....Why do I want them to know what I have set as my default search
Engine. Maybe it's www.searchporn.com and I don't want them to know
that.

"The Software also sends a configuration request when you start your
browser. This request is approximately 5k in size and includes only
anonymous data such as IP address, browser type, and information about
the specific release date and distribution source of your Software, as
outlined above."
Will.....Only 5k, that's like 5,000 characters in case your wondering.
There is that IP address again. Please note that during my sniffing
activities I noticed it's not just your internet address, if you are on an internal
network they send that address. Now in their logs they will have your
external address and your internal address. I don't necessarily think they would
do anything bad, but someone could sniff that information the same way
I did and then have a head start on hacking your network. I'm just
saying....

"When you visit the Web Sites, we may place a small text file-called a
"cookie"-on your computer that allows us to identify your Web browser."
Will.....They keep saying not spyware, not identifiable information, but
what's this...

"We also capture your source IP address which is a standard practice for
most internet sites."
Will.....Once again this is where they are able to get your external
address which would match up nicely with your internal address.

"If any of the Web Sites or the Software is ever sold or all or
substantially all of the assets relating to a Web Site or the Software are transferred
to another entity, we may transfer all information provided by or collected
from you, including personally identifiable information,"
Will.....In the world of dot com and the internet companies are bought
and sold all the time. I'd be worried that since they claim to not be spyware, they
are very similar to my definition of spyware, and that they may be sold to, or
buy a spyware company and now they have my information.

"However, if you elect to provide any information in connection with the
use of any other services Licensor offers, you agree to provide and to
maintain fully accurate, complete and current information. If Licensor has
reasonable grounds to suspect that such information is inaccurate, not current or
not complete, Licensor has the right to suspend or terminate your use of the Software
or our services, and pursue any appropriate legal remedies."
Will.....So, you don't have to give them information, but if you do it
HAS to be accurate or they will terminate you. Why would they need that info
if they weren't using it???

"you may be required to accept additional terms and conditions and/or,
establish an account including an unique identification code or name
(an "ID") and password (a "Password")."
Will.....Once again, no identifiable info, but in some cases you are
REQUIRED to accept or create an account.

I think spyware. What do you think?

Power Over Ethernet

http://kevinrose.typepad.com/kr/2004/09/power_over_ethe.html This is a very cool technology. 3 Com does the same thing with their IP phones. We have a 3Com NBX100 at work. We can simply add a card into the phone system that put out power over the ethernet cable. This way you can plug in an IP phone into the network and with out any additional power cables the phone works. Those power cables are really a pain in the ass... Anyway, just thought that was cool.....

Mucho Tráfico

Wow, check out the traffic.... Notice the Average Projected uniques. They are up 33,965%. The Projected Hits are also up 7,130.9%. If you are looking at the graph the red line is today and the blue line is the moving average. Another interesting stats is on the browsers page, not shown, 50.7% of all hits were from Mozilla with only 42.4% going to Explorer. YEAH, Firefox..... This just is no doubtedly from the trackbacks to a couple of Kevin Rose's post....

Another cool google hack!

Well it looks like Kevin has another cool Google hack. Hopefully it doesn't go away like his last one did. Until it was overused you could go to Google and search for visa 4356000000000000..4356999999999999 and it would bring back a list of basically credit card numbers and names. I believe exp dates were included as well. Tens of thousands of them. Very dangerous situation. Now of course it just brings up a list of websites that have that hack on it, like this one. :) Here are the new ones... You can easily change them up to find some pretty interesting things....

Appz
DVD Rips
XVid's
Gamez
MP3's

Like we need another reason….

So just in case you haven't had a reason to switch to linux or OSx up to this point, here's one that should make you seriously think about it. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-028.mspx It effects nearly every current version of windows, and if you happen to have office installed it doesn't help to just patch windows, you have to patch office as well. If it weren't for the games my good buddy bill would never see another dime of my money.

Dave's not here, man...!

Plan B

Well after a lot of reading and some serious consideration I think I've made a change in my Xbox hacking attemp. That is unless I hear of a better way to do it. I'm still going to hack it but I'm going to do a mod chip instead. The chip I want is at www.system-mods.com but is not due in until the end of the month. I heard of a couple of people having issues with the save game hack's and them vegging out their systems... I would rather not do that. I figure this way when I have the mod chip in and working nicely I can than upgrade the HDD. It'll be better that way so I can do the movie/mp3 thang.

XBox Hack

So Kevin Rose's article convinced me that I really needed to hack an Xbox. Ya know since I've hacked like half the appliances and machines in my house it's time to add one more to the list. I thought about hacking one of my other Tivo's, got 3 of them now, but that's old stuff now. What I've decided to do is a chipless mod on an Xbox. Many of the other hacks on the Xbox require to you add a mod chip. Some of these are soldier on but many of the new ones are just a contact connection rather than soldier. I'm sure I could handle either one of those types of mod's but I figured that many people would be more comfortable with something that is software only. Plus there is something about they way the hack is performed. This is the sort description of the hack. First you purchase a Xbox, by Microsoft. Then you pruchase MechAssault, by Microsoft. Then you order a free usb keyboard adapter for Fantasystar Online, by Microsoft. Are you starting to see a pattern here. :) From that point it's just a bit of software. You use a hack on the audio system to access the Xbox at a level lower than the default xbox software.

I'm just about to a point of getting ready to try this. I purchased the Mechassault over the weekend. It was $12.99. Two weeks ago I ordered the fantasy star online adapter from Microsoft. It was just under $7 for shipping and handling. I have downloaded all the software and read all about the procdure. I'm using a bastardized version of the hack instuctions. I hope it works. I'm basicly changing the way I get parts of the software to the Xbox. It should work just as normal but saves me from purchasing another piece of software. As soon as I get the adapter I'll be ready and then at that point I'll go purchase the Xbox. I didn't want to get it early and then get attached to it and not wanna take the change of the hack.

Anyway, wish me luck and I'll let you know how things turn out...
